Assignments

*More detailed information for each assignment will be posted throughout the semester*

  • Minor Assignments:
    • Sample Docs –  Practice documents to be created throughout semester alongside models we’ll be looking over together.
      • Take a look at the individual posts on the Blog page for more details regarding each piece.
    • Perusall Annotations – See detailed instructions posted here. Communal marginal notes on PDFs of readings.
  • Major Projects:
    • Civic Identity Poster – Multimedia representation (in either digital or hard-copy form) of who you are as a citizen. To be shared and discussed during class time.
    • Community Issue Brief – One to two page objective description of a civic issue (local, state, national, or global) about which you are passionate and on which you’d like to focus your research and writing this semester.
    • Op-Ed – Journalistic opinion piece focused on the civic issue you’ve chosen to work with this semester.
    • Civic Engagement Experience Project – Writing/communication-based civic engagement of your own design focused on the issue you’ve chosen to work with this semester. This could take many shapes – a journalistic write up of interviews with leaders in community groups/politicians, a white paper for a specific group of stakeholders, creating a social media and/or marketing package for a specific organization/non-profit, writing a grant, designing a website or educational materials for a community organization in need, creating journalistic video to synthesize information about your issue for a specific group of stakeholders or the public, etc. Individual conferences, peer review, and informal presentation of final product included throughout writing process.
