Exercise: Local News Treasure Hunt

  1. Take a look at NJ.com (If you don’t have an account, you can use mine to get around the “subscriber only” paywalls – email: erin.andersen@centenaryuniversity.edu ; password: Centenary123 )
  2. Click around some of the main stories. Then read through some of the stories listed under Warren County in the “News By County” section.
  3. What kind of stories do you notice?
    • Reports  of disasters and accidents? Youth sports? Any civic-oriented stories?
  4. When you find stories dealing with civic issues, read them over. What do you notice about the reporting?
    • Traditional or civic journalism?
    • What elements do the journalists highlight?
    • What seems to be the goal of the story?
  5. Can you make any connections to the concepts brought up in Oliver’s piece?
  6. What does this quick review tell you about possibilities/avenues for civic engagement in our area? What concerns do local citizens have?
